The group was formed though the survival show Stray Kids held by the JYP Entertainment in collaboration with the TV channel Mnet.
The 9 members were in the survival show to decide if they were going to debut or not. The leader, Bang Chan, chose all the members of the group.
Lee Know was eliminated in the 4th episode and Felix in the 8th but JYP added them both back for the 9th episode.
In the last episode, the votes of the public decided if they were going to debut with 9 (so with everyone) or 7 (without Felix and Lee Know) members. 96% of the public voted for them to debut as 9.
A PreDebut album named Mixtape was released on January 8th 2018 with all the songs they wrote and produced during the Survival Show.

Bang Chan, Han and Changbin are in a K-Hiphop crew named 3RACHA. They created it before the survival show.
